Project management software Asana and Teamwork help teams collaborate and communicate better. They both tick the regular project management checkboxes — task lists, due dates, collaborative tools. But how do they compare?

What standout features do they offer? How do they fare on pricing and customer support? We put them through the ultimate project management sniff test to see who comes out on top.

Let’s dive in.

What is Asana?

Started by ex-Facebook employees Dustin Moskovitz and Justin Rosenstein, Asana is a classic case of the founders scratching their own itch. What started as a way to manage internal communication within Facebook quickly became a full-fledged tool.

Today, Asana helps teams organize work into task lists and boards.

What is Teamwork?

Teamwork is a project management tool designed around collaboration. It allows you to collaborate with your team as well as clients and track time within the app.

What to look for in project management software

The right project management software for your team will depend on unique factors such as:

  • Size of your team
  • Scope of projects you want to manage (say, blog writing vs marketing strategy for six months)
  • How much support you think you’ll need

Once you’ve defined your needs, here are some must-have features to look for in project management software:

  • Customization: How does it jive with your team and the way your team works?
  • Project views: Think Kanban board, Gantt chart, timeline, and calendar view.
  • Templates: Think project templates, task list templates, and team-specific templates.
  • Advanced features: This could be reporting, automation and time tracking, or any number of other modern PM tools.

Psst! Before we go much further with this project management showdown, we have to mention that monday.com meets all of these criteria (and more!). Okay, back to being objective…

Now we have a little more context on what to look for, let’s see what you can do with Asana and Teamwork.

What are the differences between Asana and Teamwork?

TL;DR — Asana has many templates to get you started, while Teamwork offers more features such as time tracking and collaboration on documents.

Asana features

Asana organizes projects into boards and lists. Projects have a task list, calendar, files, and communications tab.

Asana aims to improve group collaboration and offers a feature called Workload, which lets you track how much work each team member currently has on their plate and prevents burnout by letting you set restrictions on their workloads. P.S. — we have a workload view too, and more.

Teamwork features

Like Asana, Teamwork has a project-based approach too, with tasks, milestones, links, files, and messages. Notebooks allow you to collaborate on documents, while time tracking lets your team log time into the app. This is useful when collaborating with clients.

However, Teamwork’s reporting and automation features are limited too. In a nutshell, both Asana and Teamwork are ideal for managing simple, small projects.

For complex projects though, Asana has a steep learning curve, while Teamwork lacks powerful project management options such as automating tasks and creating custom reports.

Luckily, monday.com offers both these features, and takes only minutes for you and your team to get up to speed.

How much do Asana and Teamwork cost?

Asana’s business plans are more expensive than that of Teamwork and offer little more in terms of features.

Asana pricing and plans:

  • Basic: This free plan is best for personal to-do lists. It includes unlimited projects, collaboration with 15 teammates, calendar, list, and board views, and 100+ integrations.
  • Premium: This plan costs $10.99 per user per month. It offers the ability to create dashboards, reports, rules, milestones, and forms.
  • Business: At $24.99 per user per month, this plan offers a custom rules builder, workload management, proofing, approvals, and integrations with Salesforce and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Enterprise: With an undisclosed price tag, this plan offers more integrations, custom branding, and priority support.

Teamwork pricing and plans:

  • Free: This plan accommodates a maximum of five users, two projects, time tracking, and offers 100 MB storage.
  • Pro: This plan costs $10 per user per month. It offers 300 projects, 100 GB storage, unlimited collaborators, project templates, and Gantt chart and board views.
  • Premium: Priced at $18 per user per month, this one offers 600 projects, 250 GB storage, 50 project templates, dashboards, workload management, and integrations with Hubspot and OneDrive Business.
  • Enterprise: This plan offers unlimited projects, better security, and a customer success manager. Its price is unlisted on the website.

Customer service comparison

Asana customer service: no phone support, only email.

The only type of support offered by Asana is through email. They’re also not upfront about response times, so who knows when you’ll get a response back, realistically.

Teamwork customer service: email and phone available for all, but only five days a week.

Teamwork’s customer support is available via phone, live chat, and email. Word of caution though: it’s unavailable during the weekend. Another bummer is the absence of response times on the website.

Asana vs. Teamwork integrations offering

Asana integrations:

Asana offers a wide range of integrations with apps from Google Suite, Microsoft apps, as well as Slack, Zoho CRM, and Pipeto. It also has an integration with TaskBill.io for time tracking.

Teamwork integrations:

Teamwork has integrations with Slack, Zapier, Google Drive and Box, for all users. Advanced integrations such as Hubspot, OneDrive Business, and Microsoft Project are available for the Enterprise and Premium plan.

Making the choice: Asana vs. Teamwork

Asana has an impressive feature-set for project management, but the more you use it, the more complex it gets. With limited support available, you might have to wade through piles of help documents to find your way.

Teamwork’s great for managing small projects with a quick set of task lists. But it lacks two important project management tools — automation and reporting capabilities. Is there a project management solution to help you automate tasks and create reports, which doesn’t take days of training to master?

There sure is! Say goodbye to your project management worries. Say hello to monday.com.
