Trello vs. monday.com: which tool you should choose in 2021

You Googled “project management software”—or something equally as exciting—and have arrived here; great choice!

So now you’re wondering: what are the differences between Trello and monday.com, and which one should I choose?

We’re here to simplify the process, and help you know you’re making the right choice when it comes to picking what will become your most used tool!

First things first:

What is Trello?

Trello is a Kanban-style project management tool owned by software giant Atlassian.

Cool fact: the name Trello derives from the word trellis, which is a structure typically used to support trees and plants!

So, what is exactly this Kanban-style we speak of?

Kanban project management is a methodology in which individual tasks are drafted so every part of a project’s workflow is easy to visualize, and so team members are assigned to individual undertakings that are easy to keep track of.

What is monday.com?

monday.com is a Work Operating System (Work OS) where you can create any tool to manage and organize everything you do at work – from projects to workflows and everything in between. It’s simple but intuitive, and helps teams of all sizes shape workflows, adjust to shifting needs, create transparency, collaborate with ease, and stop doing manual grunt work.

Yes, you can use monday.com to manage all your projects, but you can also use it as a CRM, to manage your ad campaigns, to track bugs, to manage customer projects, and to manage video production, or just about anything, no matter how complex, really.

monday.com vs. Trello: what are the differences? 

TL;DR – Trello specializes in Kanban, while monday.com has Kanban views, but plenty of other views, automations, and integrations, too!

Since no team or manager has identical needs, you should ask yourself a few of our handy-dandy questions to help you choose the right project management tool:

  • How big is my team?
  • How many team members is the task management tool intended for?
  • How type of customer support will I need?
  • Is there a specific project management methodology I want to follow?
  • What kinds of tasks will I be using this management tool for?
  • What kinds of integrations do I plan on using?
  • How important are time-tracking tools and reporting capabilities?

Depending on how you answered the above questions, our analysis below should help you figure out which of Trello or monday.com (wink wink) is the best fit for your task management needs.

Essentially, the biggest difference between monday.com and Trello is their options of different views. Both of us offer Kanban boards! But Trello only offers Kanban boards, while not delving deeply into other project management methodologies or showcasing other views.

If you’re part of a small team and aim to become a Kanban aficionado without needing comprehensive reporting capabilities, shareable forms, or customer support on the weekend, then you might be able to use Trello with some success.

Since Trello is also owned by Atlassian, which offers another project management tool aimed at software developers called Jira, Trello offers similar features aimed at software developers.

  • View your data however you want to – Just like Trello, monday.com offers Kanban views, as we’ve mentioned above! But we also believe that flexibility is the name of the game, and therefore also include other views, including: timeline, Gantt, Calendar, and more!

Pricing: Trello is cheaper, but offers limited options

TL;DR – Trello has a free plan and monday.com doesn’t after the free trial, but you do get more customizations (views, forms, etc.) better customer support, and better visuals with monday.com, so  you get what you pay for!

  • Free—Trello’s most basic plan is offered for free for an indefinite period, but the company’s website doesn’t state for how many people per team. However, the free plan limits users to 10 boards per team and 10 MB per file attachment.
  • Business class—upgrading to Trello’s business class plan opens up unlimited boards for teams, and also email customer support with a guaranteed response within one business day. However, there is still a file attachment limit of 250 MB per file, and sets users back $9.99 per user per month.
  • Enterprise—Trello’s enterprise plan offers essentially the same features as its business class plan, but for bigger teams. The price per user becomes lower as the amount of users increases, so there isn’t a set price per user.

  • Pro—monday.com’s pro plan costs $16 per user per month, and enables the use of a formula column to reduce the need to calculate things yourself, as well as time-tracking capabilities.
  • Enterprise—our enterprise plan varies by price depending on company size and specific needs but includes tailored onboarding support, high-level reporting capabilities, and more!

Trello support: check your email

TL;DR – Trello only offers support by email.

Trello’s free plan lists nothing about support, so it’s hard to say what kind of support, if any, its non-paying customers can expect.

For users opting for Trello’s business and enterprise plans, clients are guaranteed an email response within one business day.
