This phenomenon is a huge roadblock in the way of productivity for individuals and teams around the world. (Don\u2019t worry, you\u2019re not alone.)<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at what it is in more detail and find out how you can leverage it to hack your efficiency (and get more done.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"cta-button blue-button\" aria-label=\"Try monday.com\" href=\"https:\/\/auth.monday.com\/users\/sign_up_new\" target=\"_blank\">Try monday.com<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What is Parkinson\u2019s Law?<\/h2>\n<p>In 1955 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C._Northcote_Parkinson\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cyril Parkinson<\/a>, a British naval historian, published a satirical piece in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Economist\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Economist<\/em><\/a>. It opened with the following (satire-free) statement: <strong>\u201cWork expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He repeated this concept in <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/blog\/productivity\/top-10-productivity-books-you-must-read\/\">two other books<\/a> he published in the following years, and the idea started taking off. Here\u2019s one example: <strong>If you give yourself three days to do a project, it\u2019ll take a full three days. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We see this happen all the time. Say you\u2019re assigned a task at work and given three weeks to complete it. You take your time and turn the finished product in on day 21, as requested.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you were only given a week to do the same assignment? Would you be able to rise to the challenge? Most likely. You\u2019d be highly focused and efficient, find helpful shortcuts, and maybe even bring in some relevant partners to get the job done.<\/p>\n<p>The thing about Parkinson\u2019s Law is this: The more time that\u2019s allocated to a task, the more thorough we are and the more complicated the task becomes. As a result, things take longer and your progress overall slows down (which may even lead you to procrastinate \u2013 yikes).<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that when you know about this phenomenon, you can work around it and be more <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/blog\/productivity\/mindfulness-at-work-5-ways-to-improve-your-productivity\/\">mindful<\/a> of your productivity. Research shows you can actually use it to boost your productivity and become more efficient at work. Here are a few examples of this for more context.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shorter shifts, more productivity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One study funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-05-10\/the-six-hour-workday-works-in-europe-what-about-america?utm_source=feedly&amp;utm_medium=webfeeds\" rel=\"nofollow\">Swedish government<\/a> found that nurses who switched from a traditional eight-hour day down to six-hour days had a reduction in stress, sick days, and an increase in total productivity when compared to the eight-hour days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smaller project windows, more incentive for efficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fh0076916\" rel=\"nofollow\">study<\/a> found that members of logging crews showed a significantly higher rate of output when limited to mill deliveries on one or two days per week than when no such buying limitations were in place. Since all parties were paid on a piece-rate basis, there was an incentive to maximize production early when restrictions have to be followed.<\/p>\n<p><em>So what do these two studies tell us? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, you can shorten a deadline on a project and still meet your requirements.
