In this blog post, we\u2019ll put a spotlight on some of your multitasking habits that could be having negative effects on your productivity and of course\u2014what you can do to bust it with monday.com Work OS.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Is multitasking bad or good?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">Multitasking is performing more than one task at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">When you consider multitasking, it doesn\u2019t seem like such a bad thing. In fact, some would claim they actually perform better when they multitask\u2014they have no issue to pay attention to multiple tasks at a time. Let\u2019s think about this with a concrete example.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>What are examples of multitasking?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">For example, especially in the era of <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link \" title=\"remote work\" href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/use-cases\/remote-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">remote work<\/a> or working from home, the chance for multitasking is much higher. Whether it\u2019s watching television while writing a brief or\u2014yikes\u2014mid-meeting scrolling through social media, multitasking can easily creep into your routine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/scott-mautz\/psychology-and-neuroscience-blow-up-the-myth-of-effective-multitasking.html\">MIT neuroscientist Earl Miller<\/a><\/span> doesn\u2019t mince his words on the matter,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cSwitching from task to task, you think you\u2019re actually paying attention to everything around you at the same time. But you\u2019re actually not,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cYou\u2019re not paying attention to one or two things simultaneously, but switching between them very rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Using a fidget spinner or other sensory tool doesn\u2019t constitute multitasking, but many other actions can take away someone\u2019s full attention and affect their productivity in the long term. But the reality is that this is nothing but an <i>illusion <\/i>of productivity. When you choose to focus on one task rather than occupying your mind with multiple cognitive tasks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/multitasking-2795003#citation-7\"><span class=\"s1\">studies show<\/span><\/a> that you are less likely to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\">Make mistakes<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Work at a slower pace<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Make poor decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\">Here are three potential costs of multitasking:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>Cost 1: You lose sight of what\u2019s important<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\">Our brains are designed to focus on one thing, so bombarding it with information can make it harder to assess things like priority and urgency. M<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/artificial-maturity\/201701\/the-unintended-consequences-multi-tasking\"><span class=\"s3\">ultitasking also increases the production of cortisol<\/span><\/a>, a hormone that causes stress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepadvisor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sleep Advisor<\/a><\/span> recommends avoiding multitasking after a poor night&#8217;s sleep as your brain activity increases in certain areas to make up for lack of sleep, but your ability to focus suffers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The outcome? Multitasking will make you feel like you\u2019re working tirelessly, making more errors than usual, and taking much longer than average (a sure-fire way to burn out).
