We decided to give \u201cEat Your Frog\u201d a shot. After all, we\u2019re all about experimenting with <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/blog\/productivity\/never-miss-deadline-effective-method-managing-time\/\">time management tips<\/a> to work better and achieve more (Remember that time we tried the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/blog\/productivity\/tried-pomodoro-technique-productivity-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pomorodo technique?<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"cta-button blue-button\" aria-label=\"Try monday.com\" href=\"https:\/\/auth.monday.com\/users\/sign_up_new\" target=\"_blank\">Try monday.com<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Eat That Frog?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tracy\u2019s book outlines 21 time management tips to plan, prioritize, and take action on the most important things in your life. His premise is that if you\u2019re overwhelmed with to-dos, your instinct might be to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario A: <\/strong>Procrastinate on the big and important things until they\u2019re looming and horrible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenario B:<\/strong> Tackle all the small, annoying, nagging tasks first to just get them over with.<\/p>\n<p>Both courses of action are wrong, according to Tracy. Do either and you\u2019ll tread water uselessly instead of propelling yourself forward. <strong>Instead, you should focus on impact. <\/strong>Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Get crystal clear on your biggest goal. What do you want to achieve most? (Define your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.founderjar.com\/key-performance-indicator-kpi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key performance indicators<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Write your goal down. (Maybe try a <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/blog\/teamwork\/team-task-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">task management software<\/a>?)<\/li>\n<li>Set a deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Make a list of all the things you need to do to achieve your goal.<\/li>\n<li>Reorganize that list in order of priority. What&#8217;s first? These are your frogs!<\/li>\n<li>Take action immediately! If you have more than one frog, eat the ugliest one first. Just do it.<\/li>\n<li>Resolve to do something every single day that moves you toward your goal. Ideally, it\u2019ll be the very first thing you do in the morning. That way, come hell or high water later in the day, you\u2019ll have put in the necessary work towards what&#8217;s most important.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>According to<em> Eat That Frog<\/em>, it\u2019s critical to plan every day in advance and always work from a list. You\u2019ll start macro with a master list, and then break it down into more granular monthly lists, weekly lists, and daily lists.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the benefit of tackling a frog every morning? That\u2019s the time of day when most people are <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/blog\/productivity\/mindfulness-at-work-5-ways-to-improve-your-productivity\/\">most productive<\/a>, so you\u2019ll be channeling your best self towards only the tasks that are of the highest value.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, we are mere humans with a limited amount of time every day, so you should always ask yourself: \u201cwhat\u2019s worth my time the most?\u201d Focus only on that, and the end result is that you\u2019ll accomplish more and will be happier.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What happened when we tried Eat That Frog<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Total honesty here? My <a href=\"http:\/\/static3.businessinsider.com\/image\/5a04ec713dbef48d0e8b508d-480\/dapulsevideo.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">partner-in-crime<\/a> and I lost interest after exactly two days. Oh, the shame! It sounded great in theory, but in practice, it just wasn\u2019t the right productivity method for us. At first, we completely misunderstood the technique\u2014we thought \u201ceat that frog\u201d meant doing the worst\/most annoying thing on our to-do list, which is, in fact, the exact opposite of what Tracy intended. So then we tried again\u2026 and then\u2026 meh. \u00af_(\u30c4)_\/\u00af<\/p>\n<p>Real devotees of <em>Eat That Frog<\/em> might say that we lack discipline and didn\u2019t take it seriously enough. They might be quite right. But in all fairness, rigid and uncompromising planning just isn\u2019t compatible with our work culture. Ours is a fast-paced startup environment where we connect with clients all around the world 24\/7 and our priorities shift on a daily, if not hourly, basis. For us, it was very hard to make Tracy\u2019s well-intentioned ideas actually actionable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It really focuses on the big picture: <\/strong>Your daily tasks feel meaningless and unending if you don\u2019t understand what your greater objective is. But if you know exactly what your goal is and are passionate about reaching it, even the most mundane task that brings you closer to it is imbued with meaning and significance. We believe wholeheartedly on <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/blog\/project-management\/why-monday-is-so-different-from-every-project-management-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">focusing on the bigger picture<\/a>, and that\u2019s one thing that Tracy really nails.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It makes it easy to prioritize:<\/strong> If you\u2019re debating about whether or not something is worth your time, Tracy has a great solution: evaluate the consequences of <em>not<\/em> doing it. All tasks can be graded by the ABCDE criteria:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>A task that you must do or else face serious consequences. These A tasks are the frogs of your life. (Yes, we\u2019re starting to turn our metaphors into even more metaphors.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>B: <\/strong>A task you should do but only has mild consequences if you don\u2019t. Someone may be unhappy or inconvenienced, but it\u2019s not as important as an A task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C<\/strong>: Something that would be nice to do but there are no consequences at all to not doing it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D:<\/strong> A task you can delegate to someone else, freeing up more of your time for A tasks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E:<\/strong> Something you can eliminate altogether with no real consequence.<\/p>\n<p>By prioritizing your tasks according to these criteria, it\u2019s easy to differentiate what\u2019s noisy and urgent in your life from what\u2019s actually important and meaningful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s impact-driven<\/strong>: Tracy is all about spending your time on the things that will have the greatest positive impact on your life, whatever that may be for you. We all only have 24 hours in the day, and it\u2019s a shame to waste all that time on things that don\u2019t matter. Thinking of it this way, it makes it much easier to say \u201cno\u201d to things that might seem urgent but aren\u2019t actually important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s inspiring<\/strong>: <em>Eat That Frog <\/em>is essentially a self-help book chock full of mantras to inspire you to take action. Think Confucius: &#8220;A journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step.&#8221; No matter how dry or cynical your personality may be, Tracy\u2019s enthusiasm is infectious. And he has a lot of pretty good advice, such as \u201cKeep your mind positive by accepting complete responsibility for yourself and for everything that happens to you. Refuse to criticize or blame others for anything.\u201d This is a good attitude for life in general!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"cta-button blue-button\" aria-label=\"Get started\" href=\"https:\/\/auth.monday.com\/users\/sign_up_new\" target=\"_blank\">Get started<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a terrible metaphor: <\/strong>We weren\u2019t the only ones who misinterpreted the meaning of \u201cEat That Frog.\u201d Everyone we talked to assumed it meant the same thing: start your day with the bad, annoying, nagging things on your to-do list to get them out of the way. There\u2019s nothing about eating a frog that says, \u201cDo things that you don\u2019t necessarily want to do but will most benefit you in the long run.\u201d A good metaphor requires no additional explanation. Here are some alternative metaphors that more accurately represent Tracy&#8217;s message:<\/p>\n<p>Eat That Bowl of Kale.<br \/>\nGo for That Five-Mile Run.<br \/>\nCall Your Grandmother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21 steps\/rules is just way too many<\/strong>: Tracy\u2019s general gist is clear and simple, but once you dive into actionable details, it becomes simultaneously repetitive and hard to follow. Tracy is the first to admit that his book presents \u201csmorgasbord of personal effectiveness techniques.&#8221;\u00a0What\u2019s a step? What\u2019s a rule? Couldn\u2019t this all have been conveyed way more concisely? Yes, most definitely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s cheesy: <\/strong><em>Eat That Frog<\/em>\u00a0takes a page from the most saccharine shelf of the self-help section. The inspirational bleeds into blatantly corny with actual sentences such as, \u201cYou ARE REMARKABLE!\u201d It\u2019s cute, but also&#8230;face palm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s rigid and unrealistic<\/strong>: (At least for our lives.) Tracy takes an uncompromising view towards your day-to-day. While discipline is definitely a good thing, you always need to be able to work dynamically and quickly pivot in new directions. For many teams and people these days, it\u2019s more important to be able to respond to change than it is to rigidly follow a plan. One tool that is important for responding to change is a <a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/work-operating-system\">work operating system<\/a>. Read more about it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re a chronic procrastinator, don\u2019t know what you want to do with your life, have trouble saying \u201cno\u201d to people\u2019s demands, or need an inspirational pick-me-up, <em>Eat That Frog <\/em>might be worth a few minutes of your time. As a general guiding principle, it\u2019s a great idea: start your day, every day, with something that will have a positive impact on your life. But as an actual technique for how to navigate all the challenges and complexities of your life, it\u2019s less helpful.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Would we do it again?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>No. We&#8217;re still on the hunt for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monday.com\/blog\/productivity\/6-productivity-systems-know\/\">productivity system<\/a> soulmate.
