Gantt charts<\/a> are a project manager\u2019s bread and butter. They indicate who\u2019s working on which tasks, dates and durations, crossovers or delays, and everything in between. Gantt charts make life easy for teams trying to get big project plans done. Unfortunately, creating one is challenging without the right Gantt tools<\/a> or the right excel Gantt chart template.<\/p>\n

The best way to build a Gantt chart is using a Work OS like monday.com<\/a>. But if you\u2019re offline or don’t mind a less customizable approach, you can also create a Gantt chart in Excel.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We’ll explain how to create a Gantt chart in Excel on a PC or a Mac and the easiest way to make a Gantt chart. We’ll also include an Excel Gantt chart template to make the process a whole lot easier. Let’s get right to it.<\/p>\n

How do you create a Gantt chart in Excel?<\/h2>\n

Well, you can\u2019t (technically). Instead, you\u2019ll have to create a stacked bar chart and embellish it to make it look like a Gantt chart.<\/p>\n

How to create an Excel Gantt chart on a PC<\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re using a PC, follow these steps:<\/p>\n

  1. Populate an Excel table with your project schedule<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Break down everything by task, and enter them into a column. You can add a start and end date as well as the task duration.<\/p>\n

    1. Turn your Excel table into a stacked bar chart<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Select a blank cell, then click the \u201cInsert\u201d tab. From the charts section, choose \u201cStacked Bar\u201d. Don\u2019t pick \u201c100% Stacked Bar\u201d \u2014your Gantt chart will look strange.<\/p>\n

      1. Format your stacked bar chart<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Next, you\u2019ll need to reverse task order so your critical path starts with task numero uno. Just select all of your task lists along the vertical access of your Gantt chart, click on the \u201cBar Chart\u201d icon, and choose \u201cFormat axis\u201d. You\u2019ll then see a checkbox called \u201cCategories in reverse order\u201d. Click it.<\/p>\n

        How to create an Excel Gantt chart on a Mac<\/h3>\n

        Creating an Excel Gantt chart using a Mac? It\u2019s slightly easier than building a Gantt chart on a PC.<\/p>\n

        Just follow these steps:<\/p>\n

        1. Create your Excel table\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Write out a task list and populate it in an Excel table.<\/p>\n

          1. Turn your Excel table into a stacked bar chart\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Just click \u201cInsert\u201d, \u201cInsert Bar Chart\u201d, and then select \u201cStacked Bar chart\u201d.<\/p>\n

            1. Format your Excel Gantt chart<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Click your data series, go to the \u201cFormat\u201d tab, then select \u201cShape Fill\u201d, and \u201cNo Fill\u201d. To get your Gantt chart in reverse task order (so that you\u2019re starting with your first task start dates), hold the control key and select your vertical axis. Then, just hit \u201cFormat Axis\u201d and choose \u201cCategories in reverse order\u201d under the \u201cAxis Position\u201d section.<\/p>\n

              That\u2019s basically it. But after you\u2019ve finished the basics, you can make little customizations like color coding is (if you prefer blue bars over orange, let’s say), and save your new Gantt chart as a template<\/a> for future use.<\/p>\n

              Is there a Gantt chart template in Excel?<\/h3>\n

              There is a Gantt chart template in Excel, but only if you\u2019re using a PC. If you work with a Mac, you\u2019re on your own. You can find Microsoft Excel\u2019s Gantt Project Planner template on the Microsoft Office website.<\/p>\n

                So, there you have it. If you\u2019re using Excel, you can build a Gantt chart in a few steps on either a Mac or PC.
